Rather than the MCC Champions shouln't this team be youngish one day specialists who do not have county tie-ups with a few experienced heads an old pros? The winners of the 50 over MCCA Trophy in July were Norfolk and the runners-up Staffordshire - if you add the Norfolk top order and the Staffs lower order plus a few other promising players hwo were head and shoulders above their counties from elsewhere you will have a decent and competitive squad. On the other hand there are 20 minor counties - should each o them be represented during the course of the competition? How did the combined minor counties team used to get selected for the B&H cup?

However I expect it's far more likely to be a dads army of home county pros recently retired from the first class game...

It seems to be taken from three sections:

Last year's County pros now without a contract (!)
Minor Counties players
Club players in First-Class Counties.

So Fisher and Wedge may well be back- against us this time.

It's a shame it isn't my home county-Norfolk.

I remember the Norfolk v Worcs game in the 1st round of the B&H cup, if memory serves it was June 21st 1991.
Held at Norwich, well me and my mate Simon went along.
A cold old windy day, which we spend most of it in the bar
But I do remember Norfolks star bowler, a West Indian nicknamed 'The Dentist', due to his ability to take all your teeth out.
I stood behind Hicky, near the sightscreen, the Dentist bowled a bouncer, Hicky ducked, it flew over the wickies head, one bounce clang into the sightscreen near me. The fastest bowler I've ever seen in the flesh.

Anyway, reminiscing over, back to the thread

John Maynard.

He's still only 40 according to the (n)ever reliable Wikipedia so maybe we could sign him.

When you mentioned The Dentist I knew that I've watched him recently. I'm sure it was either in the Stanford series last year or it might have been the televised West Indies domestic T20 'jolly for the lolly'. As manandvans says, he's past his prime but it just struck me what a great nickname to have as a fast bowler.

Staying off the thread (sorry Admin) I watched the WC match between Zim and Windies at Edgbaston in 1982 (? thereabouts) with Marshall bowling at Jack Heron who was a half decent opener. He bowled a bouncer and it smacked Heron on the helmet - he hadn't moved an inch and literally didn't see it. Can still remember the noise today.

Is it just me, or is this Recreational XI sounding more and more like the Cavaliers every day? I am now expecting Caddick to be playing for them- and can we rule out Hicky?
