PostSubject: What we are facing   Mon Nov 02, 2009 7:43 pm

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/cricket/counties/worcestershire/8331304.stm

Have not seen this brought up anywhere else and I think it makes interesting reading. If this is what we are facing then you can see why Rhodes has not been chasing down all the things that seem to on so many peoples christmas wish list.

If the Harmmison number is correct then £150,000 a year is an awful lot of money in anyones book and I can well see why Rhodes is a)unable and b) reluctant to pay it.

We are going the same way as football whether we like it or not and the next will be the sort of headlines that we have seen from the Wigan footballer. Too much money for people to young to know how to handle it or themselves in public.

We will end up looking back on things like Batty's stupidity on a motot scooter as a romantic bygone age!

I had mentioned the punchline to that elsewhere- that less Kolpaks have the effect of creating scarcity in the labour supply- a bit of Economics 101 here- and thus ram up the cost of Home players...I have to admit I didn't see that coming and I was not the only one...I also mentioned Harmy on 600k- it is a 4 year contract.

Will we go the way of Marlon King? I think he is the end of the extreme- but there are many examples of footballers with too much money than sense and so many just party the night away. The good thing about cricket is that we have only two or three 'big names'- but even they come with coteries of allied players at County or England level- that makes up to 20 leary types with two or three footing the bill. So -probably not. But you can't tell at this stage.

It is when you think about it.
£150K for 5 months work.
£30K a month
£1K a day

Absolutely mind blowing that a solid county pro could earn this much dough

I would expect Harmison to be the most highly paid player on the county circuit. I can't think of anyone who is more likely to win championship matches, he is totally dedicated to his county and unlikely to be distracted by England duty.

His 100% line and length bowling makes him worth every penny.

I presume this is the exception that proves the rule
